How Would You Rule?

SCENARIO: In a Division I, ITA dual match, player A spits in the face of the official following his doubles match. The other two doubles matches are still playing.

HOW WOULD YOU RULE?

1. Wipe the spit off your face and then give him a hug and tell you understood that he had a difficult childhood.

2. Call the player's mother.

3. Issue a code violation--default. Then default the highest doubles match still playing.

4. Issue a code violation--default. Then default the player from his singles match.

5. Call the coaches together and ask for their advice.

Kick the player out of the match site and default highest remaining court as the penalty.

I assume the coach could replace the player in singles, by moving everyone up a line.

I also would assume the ITA/NCAA would suspend said player indefinately, especially if the coach/school does nothing.

This is definately a Code default. Where doubles is played first, the default would go to the highest doubles match still playing, if the doubles point has not been deceided (I would also eject him from the match, might just wait until singles warmup had started so they couldn't replace him), otherwise he is defaulted if he is playing singles. If he is not playing singles, well the #1 singles is defaulted at which time you might call security.

My questions:

Do you need to wait until the next game of the highest playing doubles match since it is a default?

Where did they find such a classless jerk anyway?

I believe the courts consider spitting on someone an assault. Having been assaulted I would be forced to defend myself. After defending myself, and assuming I am in an umpire rather than referee function, I'd call for the referee, advise him/her of the situation and recommend the imposition of a carryover default against the highest doubles match in play. Later I'd send a note to the president of the university and the school's athletic director. I would, of course, cc the ITA, The USTA Texas section Officials Committee (that'll strike fear into everyone's heart) and the USTA Officials Chairman. What the hecjk, I might even cc President Barack Obama whom, I'm sure, would want to compensate me in the form of millions of taxpayer dollars and use me as the poster child for the next round of bailouts.

If I understand the new ITA rules, the penalty would be default of the highest doubles match still playing.

The correct answer is #4. If the player was not playing singles, then the #1 player is defaulted. Oh yeah, and then the Referee would have to file a report with the schools Athletic Director and ITA office.

#4. Player is defaulted from his singles match. He cannot be replaced in the line-up and his team loses that singles point.

If the player is not in the singles line-up, then his team loses the #1 singles match.
