New Indoor Facility At Baylor University

Headlines announcing the new facility.

Architect's drawing.

The headlines of the Waco Tribune today announced the new Baylor University indoor tennis facility. The new indoor courts will be located across from the Ferrell Center on the Baylor campus. The facility will feature four indoor courts at an approximate cost of $7 million.

Perhaps this will encourage the same development at UT and A&M. SMU already has plans for their indoor facility.

Things are on the move in Texas...

Actually UT has broken ground already on their facility per their Head Coach. It will be at Steiner Ranch near the UT Golf Course.

Maybe it'll cut dowwn on the number of fanatics, I mean fans, that go to the matches. Or will it just make it noisier since it's indoors?

4 courts!! Geeezz. Is the property not big enough to squeeze in 6 courts?

I bet when A&M and Texas get indoor courts, thay both have at least a 6 court facility. OU will still have the premier tennis facility in the Big 12.

Only FOUR indoor courts. You have to be kidding. That will almost be useless. I can't believe Baylor isn't smart enough to get at least 6 indoor courts. Why not cut down on non-value added expenses and spend that money where it counts, on COURTS.

Hell, why not just build one indoor court so that ex-HP dude can practice and not tie up the varsity courts when he comes to town.

From what I hear from my unimpeachable sources in Waco, this place is going to be state of the art in everything. The only bad thing about four courts is that the referee and at least one other official are going to be there for a long long time...

So what about officials 5 and 6? Would they still get paid even tho now only 4 are required? And if they stayed to do their singles match and the others are let go, 5 and 6 could be putting in 2-3 more hours as everyone's arrive time would be the same...

I'm sure officials #5 and #6 will just have to wait until their turn comes along since they normally use a referee plus 6 at Baylor. Might tend to be a long evening... At least Chuck will take you out to eat afterwards.

Six Courts is a mst - leave it to BU to screw up big money!

4 courts and $11 million, sound pretty ridiculous to spend that much on just 4 courts, why not make it six and like others mentioned take away some of the grandiose.

So much for the Aggie jokes. Looks like the joke is on Baylor!

Baylor is only putting in 4 courts?? What's up with that!! Even TCU has more than that with their 5 courts!!!

After reading some of the posts on this subject,I was going to address my comments to Larry,Curly, and Moe.
However the list keeps growing so I will generously refer to the writers of some of these comments as a Confederacy of Dunces.
First a primer on college sports for the refugees from the (former)planet Pluto;
-PURPOSES for an indoor tennis facility
#1-recruiting
If you are not aware of the impact facilities have on recruiting,WAKE UP!
#2-practice
no lost practice days, ability to prepare for all conditions, option of closed practice
#3-scheduling
allows elite teams from other parts of the country to travel long distances with
confidence they will be able to play the match
Since strength of schedule is a major component of rankings/seeding this is
increasingly important to teams competing @ the highest level such as
UT,Baylor, and TAMU in maintaining a quality non conference schedule

-CONSIDERATIONS for NUMBER of COURTS
#1-master campus/facilities plan for the individual university
-space available, architectural standards, choice of on or off campus
#2-cost vs need
-in many cases the construction of support facilities within the indoor center
will stretch the limits of space or funding(see PURPOSES above)
-with the completion of the new facility @ Baylor the number of Private schools
with indoor facilities south of I 40 will be raised to ONE(SMU will soon make two)
God Bless Texas
#3-ITA tennis is an outdoor sport
- schools such as Tenn, Kentucky, and Georgia built 4 court indoor facilities
(see PURPOSES above)
keep in mind that these are schools with budgets only UT and TAMU can even imagine
in our state
A correction: the facility is projected @ $7 million
A note about fans and noise:
The indoor facility on campus will certainly have a positive impact on both student and fan attendance during bad weather. I certainly hope they will be loud(er), like a good night at TAMU or better yet, like Georgia where the barking noise makes it hard to hear sometimes.A real college sporting event!
Congratulations to Baylor, and UT as well for continuing their commitment to ITA tennis
It is something to ponder than Baylor, who struggles to compete financially with larger state schools, and UT who has no space on campus to work with, are ahead of TAMU who has both the space and the budget available(?)
Have no fear Aggies,I don't think it will be long until you catch up.
A final note:
Thanks to all the financial supporters of ITA tennis in Texas without whom the sport would go the way of collegiate wrestling
Special thanks to Jim and Nell Hawkins for their gift to the constuction of the Indoor facility at Baylor

Haymuncher might want to review a map. Baylor will now become just the 2nd school south of I-40 to have an indoor facility for tennis. OU opened their fabulous 6-COURT indoor facilty 2 years ago. My map indicates that OU is about 20 MILES south of I-40.

Maybe the Munch actually meant I-20; which is about 220 miles south of I-40.

The State legislature in Oklahoma will be glad to hear from Larry
that OU is a private school That should save the taxpayers about
one billion $$ a year

Don't forget about TCU. They have had their 5 indoor courts for as long as I can remember.

Come on Haymuncher. Only a fool would say indoor courts are for everything else except for the number one priority of having the ability to play matches during inclement weather.

Just to be clear...

UT's indoor facility broke ground only on the ROAD to the facility. The official ground breaking will be next week.

It will be 6 indoor and 4 outdoor courts and located next to the UT Golf Club. The assumption is that it will be ready to play in by Dec 2012.

The entire project is 7 million, BUT that also includes a very nice swimming pool and 24 casitas that will be rented to people who would like to spend a night or weekend out there (or officials if UT would ever host the Indoors)

I assume there is something other than just 4 tennis courts being built at Baylor for their 7 mil.

As for Texas A&M, they were well on their way to raising the money for a facility (they have the land) when several things occurred....

The university changed the requirements to break ground (because the athletic dept was in financial trouble), the Dallas Cowboy bubble collapsed (meaning they could not build a bubble which was the initial idea) and the money they had invested tanked when the market crashed.

A&M will get this done in the next few years. I believe that 100%. Now that their atheltic department is on better financial ground, the Aggies will find the money.

Baylor's facility is actually "6" indoor courts each with spectator seating, not "4". Not sure if there was an upgrade at somepoint or someone just had some bad information, but it appears Baylor is doing it right.

Baylor's facility is actually 6 courts not four as originally referenced in this blog.
