She is ranked 172nd this week, and only the top 105 players have been granted direct entry into the field for the year's last major championship, which starts Aug. 29 in New York.
But because Williams was sidelined more than six months by a series of health issues, she has the right to use her special ranking to enter up to eight tournaments, including one Grand Slam.
"I have nothing to lose," Williams said Wednesday at a news conference in New York City before a World Team Tennis event. "I think that's when people are the most dangerous."
The U.S. Tennis Association announced Wednesday that the provisional field for the U.S. Open has 97 of the top 100 women in the WTA rankings, including two-time defending champion Kim Clijsters, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and French Open champion Li Na.
Williams said she expects to play in upcoming WTA tournaments at Stanford, Toronto and Cincinnati to get into shape.
"It was really awful to miss the Open last year," Williams said. "My goal is to make sure I'm really fit. It's the longest I've taken ever taken off from tennis, so it's a challenge."

I also read this morning that she was voted most popular female athlete in the world for last year. I have no idea who was polled for this because I don't know anyone that likes her, either as a person or a player.
I don't like her but she is good for womens tennis
I like her more than the rest of the bland field of women tennis players. At least she has some flair about herself and not just an Eastern European machine.
I wonder who improved her "upper body strength"?
The same people that voted Obama into office were dumb enough to also for Serena. It must have been a really bad year for female athletes. Nough said...
It is so unfortunate that she's all we've got. American female players are just a bunch of spoiled princess'. And I'm female!
other top contenders were Anna Kournikova and Martina Navratilova.
NEWS FLASH!!!!
Reuters; NYC. 7/21/11.
Serna Williams, who was just recently granted a special 'wild card' into the U.S. Open tennis tournament has now decided to forego that event and now concentrate on getting into tip-top shape to prepare for her new career in the NFL. With the CBA (collective bargaining agreement) now on the verge of being approved by the players union, Serna has indicated she will be singing a free-agent contract to play inside linebacker for the NY Giants. Her first comments were; Bring It On Boys!!!
Hut!! Hut!! Hut!!

Time to take a serious introspective look at yourself. I'm guessing there was a ratiionalization that the post was politically slanted, but the political aspect is nothing more than a smokescreen to thinly mask racism.
I'm surprised that Randy allowed it to be published.
Puleeze, no jackaninny liberal sanctimoious clap trap-----
Stick to the topic of the serenaoid,
has she had a DNA test?, let's see how much female she is, or what kind with current genomic research.
Her annoying personality spits on the tradition of tennis, an European high culture invention,
just never made it to Watts, and daddy ghetto.
She is coddled by the heinous pukeoids of the white traitor michale vick dogs media softies.
Pure hopelessness.
AYEEEEEEEEEEEEEE - i love her screeming it excites me.
