New Rule Changes

I received a copy from "on high" in the USTA world concerning these changes. If you would like a copy of the original changes and explanations, just email me and ask and I'll send it to you. My email is: rmtennis@yahoo.com

Listed below are rule changes EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2011:

Amend Section 12 of The Code (P. 47) as follows:

12. Out calls reversed. A player who calls a ball out shall reverse the call if the player becomes uncertain or realizes that the ball was good. The point goes to the opponent and is not replayed. However, when a receiver reverses a fault call on a serve that hits the net, the server is entitled to two serves.

Amend Section 16 of The Code (P. 47) be deleting in its entirety and renumbering the remaining subsections (P. 47).

Amend Table 10 (P. 109) as follows:

III. Conducting the tournament.
C. Rest.
1. Rest between matches unchanged.
2. Rest between sets.

TIME ALLOWED BETWEEN SETS

* B & G 18 Mandatory 10 minute rest period between 2nd and 3rd sets. During this time no player shall practice.

* B & G 12-18 Mandatory 3 minute rest period between 2nd set and tiebreak when match tiebreak is used in lieu of a 3rd set. During this time no player shall practice.
* A player is governed by the rest period in the division in which the player plays.

* Coaching is not allowed during a 120-second set break. Coaching is allowed during any
mandatory 3-minute or 10-minute rest period and any optional 10-minute rest period.

By deleting section 16, and reading the rationale for it, this changes makes it look like you are not being allowed to question your opponents call. I recognize the intent behind doing this, but they didn't create an alternative or explain how you are supposed to question your opponent's call. Can you elaborate more if you have some insight?

Here is the official explanation from on high for that one:

Part II – Rationale: The language specifically allowing a player to question an opponent’s call was not
in the original Code and was only added as Section 16 in 1999 for the purpose of clarifying that a player
may civilly ask an opponent about a call that the player genuinely believes to be incorrect. Based upon
anecdotal evidence being reported to the Committee, it seems that Section 16 is more often being
invoked by experienced players attempting to intimidate less experienced opponents into changing their
calls; thus, it appears Section 16 is actually having the opposite of its intended effect. The Committee
believes this unsportsmanlike practice will diminish if the proposed revision is approved.
Effective Date: January 1, 2011

Hope the previous explanation helps.

So a fault call that is reversed and the return hits the net, allows the server two serves and not the point. That may xause some confusion. Boys & Girls 18s get a 10 minute break between 2nd & 3rd set. I"m sure the heat informed that rule change, as it should.
3 minute break that allows coaching before Match Tiebreak, surely the coaching has to be off court, Interesting changes, when I saw the update I assumed it pertained to ITA, anyway thanks for the heads-up Randy

I did read that already and it doesn't explain how a player is now supposed to question a call since they took out the section that explains how they are supposed to question a call and didn't supply an alternative to what was removed, or am I just missing something?

I guess they are assuming that players will be nice and only make good calls so there would be no need to question...

B & G 18's now have a Mandatory 'Rest Period'. What this really is; is a Mandatory Coaching Period.

Where's the mandatory lunch for all officials?

I'm just wondering what we do if they question another player about their call.

Code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct???

So players can no longer question their opponents call. So does that mean a "Code Violation - Unsportsmanlike Conduct - Questioning An Opponents Call" is warranted.

Interesting, very interesting.
