Congratulations To The Visionary Leadership of The ITA

Thanks to the leadership of the ITA the new shirts (pictured below) became a reality in 2010.

For those of you who have been involved in tennis officiating for a long time you know that change often comes slowly if at all--but this is not the case for the leadership of the ITA.

About a year ago Myron Krueger, Chuck Scott, and I presented a proposal to the ITA about having a distinctive and unique ITA to wear in all ITA events. Thanks to the visionary leadership of David Benjamin and Angel Prinos in conjunction with the USTA and our Texas Sectional Chairman (Bruce Sampley), we were able to implement the new shirts last January and they have been nothing short of a rousing success.

Listed below are the schools and events that use the new ITA shirt:

Baylor University
Collin College
SMU
TCU
University of Texas
University of Oklahoma
Oklahoma State University
University of Arkansas
University of Tulsa
Rice
University of Houston
Howard Payne University
University of Texas at Dallas
University of Texas at Arlington
University of North Texas
Southland Conference Tournament
Junior College Men's National Tournament
Tyler Junior College
University of Denver
Numerous universities in California

A special thank you to David and Angel for their leadership. You are all much-appreciated!

Where is Texas A&M on this list?

I think some credit should be given to Mike Luevano in N. California because he is the FIRST to get permission from the ITA and has been using the ITA logo shirt on a blue shirt for 7 years.

The shirt is used for over 300 dual matches and numerous college tournaments in Fall and Spring including the big schools, Stanford and Cal Berkeley, Nevada, Santa Clara, Fresno State just to name a few.

He had to fight battles with the
Nor Cal USTA officials committe who tried to ban the ITA shirt when the new USTA shirts came out. He fought that battle for everyone going forward!

A&M has chosen not to participate with every other major university in Texas. Why is up to you to figure out.

I've got an ITA question for you.

If Player A, when scrambling for a ball grunts in such a way that the opponent, thinking the Player A called the ball out, stops play as Player A strikes a winner off of that stroke. What is the ruling? It is obviously an unintentional hinderance, but do you allow a let (on first occurance, along with a caution that any further hinderances will cost a point to the opponent) or in ITA do you just award the point to the opponent?

BTW. Okay we get it everyone, get over the A&M junk already.

Let me guess. It has to do with that CERTAIN official from there that doesn't play well with the other kids.

At least that's the rumor we hear up North of Boomer Sooner land.

Eeyore,

So now we at least know that you live north of Boomer Sooner land??

The post was never intended to slight Mike Luevano. It was about Texas and our journey here in the state. Perhaps in the future we will do a post on all that Mike had to go through to get an ITA shirt in California. He did a great job!

RM , how about expounding on that list of "numerous universities in California". I didn't know that the self-appointed ITA guru from California had blessed this new uniform gear.

Mike Luevano is the one who got the ITA shirts going in California. It is not blessed by the guru of which you speak and she refers to them as "rogue officials."

I did remind her that we were probably considered the same thing here in Texas--but we are a big loving family of rogues...

Well, good job for Mike. I had thought everyone in California had been neutered.

But, to be clear, they are using something other than our new green ITA logo gear.

The ones in California are navy blue but have the same ITA logo as we have here in Texas.

Unfortunately, up here North of Boomer Sooner land, the MV numbnuts won't pull their head out of you know where. Until Richie blesses it, they have put the kobosh on sanctioning the new ITA logo gear.

RM said...

In essence Richie has already blessed it. Before we could get the shirts we had to get the approval of the ITA and the USTA. The USTA office told us that when the Sectional Chairman signed off on it that that would be their approval.

All of those things happened hence his approval is there...

Maybe someone can point that out to the MV people in KC. My understanding is there stance is the DIVERSITY GANG in NYC doesn't endorse the use of the new ITA logo gear and so MV is against it's use too. If you bring up the ITA logo gear in KC you are subject to Double Secret Probation. Some of us do venture Southward at times and we really like the new gear.

I've been an umpire for over 10 years, and I'm always facinated by the history (stories about players. other officials, and USTA)that some officials sometimes share,(usually in very vague references that we have to piece together over years). How about a question to all the officials about their best story. USTA if you don't like the entry, then rebut and explain what really happened. Players, tell us what you really thought. Officials, if you make the "accusation", back it up with reasons, not just feelings. I notice that the posts that get the most response deal with feelings. Please explain why you feel that way. I would appreciate it and it will help me understand the statement better.

So glad you guys got your pretty green shirts with three little ITA letters on them... this is about the third time you've posted about them. Great. Yes, A&M doesn't let you where them. There's a crazy official down there. We get that. The Aggies are racist against Green shirts. Who know? Hell, I ultimately blame Myron. Doesn't he have some sway?

Let's move on to something more important like how Ivanovic got four time penalties today for going to the locker room after the first game of her match (costing her a game)

Someone when officiating was still fun said...

Re: Anon, it would be pretty hard to pick out just any 1 story.

But any discussions would always have to include the numerous stories of tournament balls; by-the-case, being found in the Referee's car. Or the stories; still-to-this-day, of the Referee/Chief Umpire calling in Newbies to learn lines as volunteer officials. ie: No Pay. These were always 'fun days' for the seasoned officials doing their job for almost 'no pay' themselves.

And how about those officials who were expert at 'collecting' any loose food or snacks; so much in fact, that they would be able to open a corner deli in their room by the end of the week.

And then you always had someone on the crew who would show up and announce he was "Mr. Serve", any any other line assignment would be unwelcome.

Finally, one of my favorite stories was when a from time-to-time official, a nice little women, called a serve "Wide".
