How Would You Rule?

Scenario: In a UIL dual match and in the #2 doubles match.

In the final game of the match, team A lost a point and both players slammed their rackets (breaking both of them) to the ground at the same time. They had already been penalized a point earlier in the match.

What would you do?

1. Penalize one player a game and then default the team for the third code violation.
2. Penalize the team a game.
3. Do nothing and hope noone was watching or heard the shattering of rackets.
4. Call the Mothers of the boys to the court for counseling.

#1. Game Penalty. Default. The fact they they committed the same misbehavior at the same time doesn't change anything. If one had broken his racket, and 3 seconds later the other hollered F***, you would give 2 separate codes. 2 players, 2 misbehaviors, 2 codes.

Now here's a question: in any match, if a player loses a point and throws his racket the length of the court and yells F*** at the same time, is that one code or two?
(I think its two.)

Sounds like you and Myron may have had a fun weekend in Wichita Falls!

Game penalty and since final game of match, I would announce Game,Set,Match.....

I concur with Anonymous. Two violations - two codes. The rules do not make allowances for simultaneous violations by both members of a doubles team.

Since it was the final game, once you give a code violation, game penalty, the match is over. Why give another code at this point? If this happened in the middle of the match, it would be the umpire's discretion on what to do. We do teach that if a person throws his racket and swears at the same time, that it is just one code. In my "opinion" this is the same thing. I would not have a problem with the umpire in charge giving two codes if he determined that they were warranted. I personally would prefer the match being determined on the court if possible. It is not always possible.

I would announce Code violation game, set, match and then tell both boys they have 2 codes each which will carry on to their Singles. If either gets a code in their Singles it would be Default out of the tournament. This would mean the player could not advance with the team.

Coach D has it correct. Some of these responses make me wonder about the abilities of some officials. Yikes!!! No wonder there is no consistency among the ranks.

As a coach...default both players from their singles and run their hiney's off as soon as we got off the bus!!!
