UIL Shirts Now Available In Texas

Good news for those who do UIL events in Texas--we now have UIL shirts and caps available for ordering.

I have gotten the approval of the UIL to do a UIL shirt and UIL cap for our UIL matches and tournaments. This is basically only for those who do UIL events and for your convenience. You must order them through me personally or your local coordinator and please note these guidelines:

* The shirts are red dry-fit and have a white UIL logo with the word "official" on them.

* The caps are khaki and have a red UIL logo with the word "official" on them.

* The shirts are made out of dry-fit material and come in small, medium, large, extra large, and 2XL. They do not come in women's sizes. There is a $1 extra charge for 2XL.

* Cost for the shirts is $28 and for the caps is $11.

* No refunds or exchanges so please be sure your sizing is correct when you order.

* Orders should be placed originally through your local coordinator and if you do not have one, you can order directly through Randy McDonald. You can place your order by email to: rmtennis@yahoo.com

* There is no tax on the order and no shipping if I can deliver them directly to you. If shipping is required, it will be billed separately.

* We take only cash or checks and payment must be made before the order is shipped or delivered.

* Deadline for the first order is February 14th with a delivery time of February 27th. After that, turnaround on orders is 7-10 days.

I hope you will find this helpful and easy to understand. I will have quite a bit of stock on hand but please understand the normal shipping time is 7-10 days. There is no such thing as overnight shipping on anything.

Please note that I am not going into the business but simply trying to provide a service for our UIL officials. All of the Texas coordinators have received emails and order forms so please use them for your original order.

If you have questions or orders you may contact me at:

They will be lovely. Can't wait to hear complaints coming in from other officials about having to buy another shirt. As I have always said, if you don't like the cooking, then get the hell out of the kitchen.

If my UIL referee person makes me wear the new $28 shirt for working one UIL match which will render me $75 - I will pass. This is silly to make/request that everyone buy UIL shirts.... especially, us people that do so few UIL.... not really sure why we shouldn't stay with our Chairpersons idea and just wear black or navy polo's? If the UIL wants us to match - buy us shirts!

So what's the Randy royality on these new products??

If the ITA is gonna get a royality, then maybe Randy should too.

Just thought I'd publish some of the comments we already got today.

BTW, Randy doesn't get a royalty on the shirts at all. Its done to help our UIL officials have something to wear besides a plain black shirt which would cause more problems than you can even begin to imagine.

Can't you just see the "Dad from Hell" wearing a plain black shirt at a UIL tournament. What a sight that would be. Then he could pretend to be an official and do what he's always wanted to do. That doesn't even begin to take into consideration the confusion that would cause for the kids.

Thanks for getting the shirts and caps.

I agree with the Anonymous note earlier ... I work only one tournament and it is crazy for me to buy a $28 shirt - I will NOT wear the shirt for another 364 days. And by that time - someone else will ant a profit off them and they will change!

Why are you stirring the pot Randy - why not just leave it alone and let the local coordinators work it out.

I would MAYBE understand it if the UIL gave us a lot more opportunities to work and paid as much as the local USTA events - but, they don't in most cases. Most of the ALL UIL events INCLUDING the State Championships pay a fraction of the going rate!

And to the guy that wrote about a Dad wearing a Black shirt... Are you nuts! There are usually only one or MAYBE two officials at these events - if the Officials cannot control this parent - they are not worthy Officials...

You are a nice guy and I am sure that your not in it for the money. Please, just back off of this issue for a little while and stop suggesting such a GRAND IDEA for the few that work a lot of UIL events... WE DON'T WANT TO BUY MORE SHIRTS...

Sorry but I cannot stand the thought of officials working important UIL events in an undesignated black shirt. If you don't want to wear a UIL shirt then don't work UIL events.

BTW, the UIL pays much better than USTA events by far. They pay more than enough for you to buy a $28 shirt. I'm not stirring any pot--I'm just making a UIL shirt available for those that want it.

Nope Sorry Randy Mc. your wrong on both issues this person brings up. First they pay less than $15 bucks an hour...AND NOTHING FOR TRAVEL!
second, "undesignated" or "designated" - your an Official and you rome the courts - your not out there to make a fashion statement at any cost!!! And what do you mean by "important" - they are ALL important - its just that there are not that many! We all have a nice Black or Navy Polo shirts - including one you can wear to Church on Sunday! And they are right - if they are "IMPORTANT" - maybe State or even Regionals - let the host buy the shirts!

Do not try and make it standard that they all have to buy a shirt for one or even two matches... Some towns cannot afford to bring officials in like you have over there in DFW area.

They are right - leave it alone - let the local UIL people make the decision...

RM said...

The local UIL people can make the decision but if you're working key UIL matches and tournaments they are going to want you to be dressed like an official and not someone with a dress black shirt from Walmart.

UIL dual matches pay $160 per match so I consider that excellent pay. Surely you can afford a shirt on that kind of pay. If not, some associations are buying shirts and then letting officials borrow them for matches. Not too sure if you'd wear one that someone else has worn but at least its a thought.

The previous post is the last denigrating post that I will print. If you don't want a shirt, then don't buy one--end of discussion.

I'm a parent of a junior tennis player and if I saw someone out at the net post in a black or blue shirt with nothing on it I would immediately wonder what they were doing and who do they think they are. Surely you officials have enough personal pride in your image to dress according to your position in life.

What will we do for score cards since the cards have USTA on them?

For all you "tennis officials", that don't think the Official at UIL matches should have a uniform please answer this question?
At what other high school competitive sport, where there are on the court, field, pitch, or other playing surface, do the officials not wear a uniform with some sort of marking designating them as an official? Is there any sport for kids where a polo shirt presently works?
If you don't have any good examples, then why do you want to lower your sport down to a level so much below other sports.
To save less than $40, you would prefer that UIL tennis be lowered to the level that anyone with a blue or black polo and khaki pants can look like, and possibly act as an official.
I don't like spending the money and having to buy another outfit either, but this discussion is ridiculous. Tennis officials are just as important as officials for football, softball, soccer, baseball, basketball wrestling, or thers, and the officials must have a uniform that designates them as such. Street clothes won't work, no matter how nice. The reason that you can wear your nice polo to church is exactly the reason you can't wear it as an official.
Respect your sport, the kids and your position.

Well said and quite astute.

Ref anonymous 8:03:
How many sports require different uniforms for the USTA equivalent of that sport, highschool, college and professional games? Maybe a different patch, but a different shirt? Different cold weather gear? I ask because I don't know the answer. Seems to me the zebras look the same in peewee, middle school, highschool, college and pro football. Baseball seems to be the same. Am I wrong?

I strongly urge our Sectional Chairman to purchase pacifiers and hand them out as the official gift at next year's Officiating schools. I never realized we have such a large group of cry babies within our officiating ranks.

Because most of the tennis in UIL is subpar and most, if not all of the kiddos playing in the 10-and-under divisions could probably play #1 singles for the schools, maybe we should rethink officiating these events and do what Little League does, use volunteer parents to officiate games.

That brings about a whole lot of additional home cooking.

I would sure beg to differ on your evaluation of UIL tennis and team tennis in particular. These matches are more competitive and intense than any USTA tournament I have ever seen and many times, are as competitive as collegiate matches. Of course two of the teams I regularly do are perennial state champions so I guess I'm seeing the best of the best.

There's nowhere on earth as exciting as doing a regional UIL 4A tournament in Wichita Falls...

Let's see--one of the teams has 12 superchamp boys and 12 superchamp girls so I guess that explains how subpar they are...

UIL tennis is some of the best and they have every right to expect the best out of us as officials--and for us to look our best when doing their tournaments and matches.

There was a time in USTA tennis when there was a striped shirt.

It was blue and brown, and it was the official shirt and looked like the officials shirts used for other sports--basic vertical stripes.

Sometime later the committee on logo something to do, got to play with shirt and apparel and gear colors,

and it went downhill after the domino's pizza fiasco.

Now there is shirt for every event, the trophies of working with those special people who happen to be officials.

But why is black the color of choice?

Anonymous said...

If the UIL wants everyone to be the same why don't the just spend some our tax dollars on making us all look the same. THAT SHOULD BE THE END OF THE DISCUSSION. Remember, some of us from small parts of Texas do not call more than ONE UIL MATCH!

Sorry if this hateful to you Randy or any of your other Brothern out there - but, PLEASE CONSIDER THAT WE DO OUR BEST with what we have... and some us do have as many PROFESSIONAL OFFICIALS as you guys do in San Antonio, DFW and Houston!

RM said...

The USTA nor the ITA either one buys your shirts so why expect the UIL to do so? Its $28 for crying out loud. You make more than that in your first match and from then on, its all profit.

Good thing you titty babies don't officiate baseball games, the gear is much more expensive and we have lots of different shirts depending what organization you work for,

The bottom line - shut the "F" up!!!
