What A Night of College Tennis! Five hours, four linesmen, and an OU victory.

OKLAHOMA UNIVERSITY MEN--4
(won the doubles point and #4, #5, and #6)

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS MEN--3
(won #1, #2, and #3)

Last night (Friday night) was a great night for collegiate men's tennis in Norman, Oklahoma as the Sooners edged the Longhorns 4-3. Here are the details:

* The match started at 6:00 p.m. and finished at 11:00 p.m. Five fun-filled hours of top notch tennis--what more could you ask for...

* The deciding match came down to the #4 singles match with the score tied 3-3.

* The deciding match ended up with a chair official and four linesmen. (Two on the long lines and two on the baselines.) Talk about coverage...

* The last two matches (#4 and #6) ended up with all players cramping but playing valiantly through their injuries.

After getting home at 2:30 a.m. I can still say it was one of the greatest evenings of collegiate tennis I have ever experienced! Congratulations to both teams for a grand evening of tennis.

Sounds like a great dual match to have watched and/or worked. I'm conflicted at the results. I'm an OU fan from way back, but also know the Horns well and how they've struggled with injuries this year. Coach Center I'm sure is disappointed, but his team will come back strong. We all knew John Roddick would put together a very strong collegiate team for the Sooners, and that he has begun. I don't think he's done just yet. Kudos and hats off to the Sooners!

I thought Roddick was only going to recruit American players. His roster sure is full of international players. What a great win regardless though. Congrats Sooners.

Wowww

I can't believe OU beat Texas

Sounds like a GREAT College Match

How come all those officials on the deciding match? I thought college tennis just had a solo chair as the match official?

And Congrats to the Sooners. That's 2 straight against the Bevo Boys.

Actually the only players cramping were the Texas players. Texas had the chance to clinch the team match at Line 6 up 6-3 in the tiebreak but lost. Then the Texas' Line 4 player was up 5-2 in the deciding set but proceeded to loose the next FIVE games. Not a good night for the 'Horns.

And the best thing of all... there was NO home cooking!

Ask the referee why there were four linesmen on the last match. I'm sure he can tell you. He was there.

I watched the match unfold and there ended up being a lot of controversy towards the end of the last two matches. It looked like the chair umpire was afraid to overrule obvious cheating by the Texas player on the middle court, at least that's what it looked like from the stands one court away. Kudos for whoever made the decision to cover all the lines with officials. Coach Roddick really mellowed after that.

It was a great match to watch and the ending was fantastic.

I was in the stands last night and would like an official to comment on the ineptness of the chair official in the deciding match. It seemed to us like he had no idea of what he was doing with that match.

2011 Big 12 Manual:

"Further, the deciding singles match shall have two line umpires, each covering half of the court."

Why four? Did the referee call the Queen and get permission to do this? Or was it requested by the coaches?

Anyone want to explain this?

I heard the chair acted like a deer in headlights. Bet his britches were all in a knot when he got out of the chair.

The referee put four linesmen on the match because he decided he needed them out there. The chair official was barely functioning.

This match cost OU a chunk of cash. 5 of the 6 officials were from Texas. How's that happen?

Anonymous said...

Wait till the OU match today. Four of the officials are from Texas and one from Indiana. Wonder what that costs?

Please understand that I do not agree with how the Big 12 coordinator of officials does her job and am not defending anything she does. That is a topic for a separate blog. (Hint, hint!)

However, if 5 of the 6 officials had been from Oklahoma, folks would be hollaring "Home Cooking!"

You just can't please everyone.

OK Randy, you started this mess, now how about let's get the facts out on the table? From the original post it would seem that all was sweetness and light from an officiating standpoint. Now, it seems some of the observers saw things in a different light. Where in lie the facts? For erxample, who was the chair in the deciding match?

I saw the OK-BU, OK-A&M match and I thought the officials were good. Not sure why everyone is upset! It was a great atmosphere. Love the fact we got to set inside to watch - very nice facility. Won't be long until the Horns have one of their own indoor palaces and that will mean we will be getting one at A&M too!

The officials were good at the OU-A&M match but in the case of one at the OU-Texas match this was not the case.

Looks like it will be FUN FUN FUN April 20th! You guys better bring your A game!

Where in the heck did they get the money to build such a nice facility - did Roddicks little bro throw in a few mil or what? Texas will never have it that good! There is no space!

Regarding all those Texas officials at the OU - TEXAS match on Friday; don't they car-pool?? Or do they all drive the same 180 miles up I-35?

After reading all the comments, looks like the solution for that last match was a replacement chair official instead of 4 additional officials to cover his lines. That looks kinda shakey for that fellow.

If you thought the OU/TEXAS dual was exciting, just wait until the OU/TULSA match starts on Tuesday.

Someone better have 911 on speed dial.

Love to see the B12 Budget! There were multiple matches this weekend in OK and OSU and the same officials were not hired for all them. Some could of carpooled - but then again who wants to ride with .....

Did Ole Miss v. Arkansas 2 weeks back and I had the second shortest roundtrip of 465 miles, so SEC and Big 12 have some huge budgets while the sisters of the poor struggle to find just 2 roving officials.

I bet the well runs dry soon! Honestly - it is OVER the TOP OFFICIATING. I say have three good officials and rove between the matches. MOST of the students are honest! Mark my words - it will not be long before the money tightens up on ALL OFFICIALS. This should be another topic all together.

I think I'd rather be a WWF Official!
