How Would You Rule?

In an ITA doubles match, the receiver's partner steps into the service box during the server's motion on the second serve.

As the chair officials on this match, how would you rule? (This actually happened at A&M and will tell you how they ruled after your discussion.)

If they stepped into the box on the server's serve, then it's the server's point

Pg 245 IC3 The receiver's partner shall not stand in the receiver's service box before or during the serve. If a player does so, he shall be warned that if he does so again he is subject to being penalized under the ITA PPS.

However, what if the receiver's partner stands behind the box on the receiver's side? What is the rule?

Warn them first and after that start the code.

Slow down there anonymous, check the ITA rules for what should be done in this situation.

It's a warning and then PPS if repeated. Assuming the partner is not dancing the conga in the box.

Call a let.
Replay the point.
Advise players that any subsequent violation of invading the partners service box during the serve will result in a code violation.

ie: I hate this penalty (code violation). Just award a point penalty for each violation after the warning. What if the code violation issued was not the 1st code violation in this match? Everybody always assumes this service box violation penalty will always be the 1st code violation for this match. Not True. I would imagine after the 1st point penalty was issued, this would stop the violation from occuring again.

If it occured during the service motion I was call a hinderance and warn the receiver's partner. Then go to a first serve for the server. If it happens again then we're into the code.

I would warn the receiver as has been noted but also allow server a first serve due to the interruption in play caused by the receiving team.

The proper response would be to stop play, warn the receiver's partner that if he stands in the receiver's service box before or during the serve again, it would be a code violation. Becuase you have stopped play, you now must announce first serve - replay the point.

Why is it that almost everybody knows how to handle this situation, but the situation involving the server's partner catching a served ball is so difficult for some officials to grasp?

Since YOU brought it up GOD - THERE ARE NO LETS IN DI Men's tennis. The Ball never bounced - therefore it is in play - OR - is it? YOU ASKED!

REALLY - why is this a question? The rule is clear guys! BUT, the topic about the servers partner is not very clear for you Texas dudes! Up here in OK - we follow the rules - ball is in play as far a division one guys are concerned... Hey the coaches made the rule - let them clearify it in the FACbook!

Interesting variations of what to do--like traveling or carrying the ball in modern basketball;

but on another topic, when you have to chair all the singles with six officials, is one the referee, or do you have a 7th? And

what do you do with the 3 extra officials during the doubles,

and when you get down to a tight match and other officials are now finished chairing, do you put them on the far side line and the service line?

Is this a coaches choice or referee decision?

"Up here in OK we follow the rules". What a joke. You must not work any Tulsa matches where the rules change match to match to fit the need of the home team.

So what happened?

Oh Lordy - I bet my most favorite official in the whole wide 100 Aker Woods was the Referee and her sidekick Rabbit was the chair umpire. Who knows how they ruled, but I bet in was definitely in A&M's favor. She probably even tracked down the local bouncer to take care of the opposing coach when she made her ruling.
