Creative Payment Options

Here is an interesting payment scenario for all you bloggers...

In a recent ITA dual match there were two officials. One official chaired the #1 doubles match while the other official roved the other two matches. In singles, the same official chaired the #1 singles match while the other official roved the other five matches.

Now which option would you consider fair:

1. Each official should get the established rate for a dual match.

2. Official #1 should get 2/9 of the pay since he only did two matches. The other official should get 7/9's of the pay since he did the other seven matches.

Interesting thought...

SPECIAL NOTE: I promised I would tell you the details so here you go...

The referee was myself and the other umpire was Lee Thornburg. Lee did both of the chairs and I was the rover. We each got paid the normal fee for an ITA match. Lee didn't like the 7/9's deal... It was great fun though!

It would appear the roving official was the referee so he should tell his chair umpire thanks and now he's trained to do college matches. Oh yeah, the referee keeps all the money. That has never happened, now has it.

Raises the issue that some officials say they only do chairs and won't rove.

Was one serving in the capacity of referee? That one should get more pay. But without that designation, I think they should get the same pay. A dual is a dual whether you chair or rove.

At some point, please tell us how it was handled.

Since it must be a Texas match, probably what happened is that the seasoned experienced official did the solo cairs and got 60% and the rookie---the one who didn't know much---roved and got 40% of the match fee. Ya gotta love those unions.

They both get the same pay Option #1. Even though the Rover covered 9 matches, they didn't cover every shot on all 9 courts. They were only watching one court at a time. Both officials workd the same number of hours, so they both get the same pay. What about when 6 officials have to show up, but only 3 work the doubles matches? Everyone still gets paid the same because they all had work the match.

Its good to find a topic everyone likes to discuss... I'll post the identities and solution later today.

Stay tuned!

Was it a Women's match? Then I would WANT to be the rover, so I'm not stuck on the same boring match for over an hour. At least roving, you can leave the courts and do something more useful.

It was a men's match and a really good one at that! I had great fun roving 5 courts and trying to see everything that happened...

This is starting to be like "MSNBC", news for the uninformed!

Strange officiating arrangement; Only two officials, and one in the chair and other matches roved?
A D-1 college match?

The SEC schools have chairs for all conference matches and most schools chair all non conference matches also.

In your area, How many officials are hired for matches in the different conferences, and do you have 6 officials for some conferences?

We do many strange and creative combinations with the men's matches at SMU.

Their favorite is to have three officials. We chair all three doubles and then chair the #1 singles with the other two umpires roving the remaining 5 matches.

Of course, six is always preferable but too expensive for some programs.

It's too expensive cause you are charging too much to officiate matches.

Hmmm, now there's a thought.

I hardly think our current pay scale is excessive.

Just take a look at what some of these tournament directors are raking in on their tournaments if you want to see excess.

The last time I looked, there aren't any tournament directors for ITA dual matches.
