Coaches--Friend, Foe, or Necessary Part of Life?

One of the greatest attributes and necessities in an ITA match is the collegiate coach--and we all have opinions and feelings about each of them--just as they do about us... Personally, I think our officials in Texas and the Big 12 are the finest in the country and certainly appreciate all they bring to the game of tennis and to our lives as officials.

Each of us can share a multitude of stories about encounters and experiences with different coaches--and they range from hilarious to amazing. We would welcome some of your favorite stories about our coaches!

Listed below are some of the coaches in Texas the Big 12. OU is currently without a coach so we would also welcome your comments about the identity of their next coach...

Once again, thanks to all our coaches for the fine job they do and for the role they play in our officiating lives.

Dave Borelli

Michael Center

Steve Denton

So what's the inside scoop on why OU is looking for a coach? Was it just wins and losses?

Not real sure but I tend to think it was because they weren't winning. Paul Lockwood was one of the good ones... He'll be overseeing the tennis facility for a few years so he can go into retirement gracefully.

Perhaps some of our fellow officials north of the Red River can give us a more informed view.

Is it just me, or do Michael Center and Matt Knoll look like they could be twins?

Coach Lockwood was one of the last coaches not hired by the current AD (Joe Castiglione). And after the golf coaches "retired" (both men & women) the following week then that cleans the slate except for women's softball and since Patty Gasso has won a National Championship (2000) then good ole Joe quickly adopted her as one of his own.

Lockwood was a savvy competitor (he truly earned that "King of Stack" title) and even though his teams were not at the top of the Big 12 they were not a rollover match either. Very competitive. He spent years working the alumni and the administration and finally got the funds put together for a great outdoor facility and now this year a fabulous indoor facility--the only one in the Big 12. And just think OU tennis had to spend 3 years at the Westwood public facility when football got the spot at the old varsity courts east of the stadium. Ouch!!
