How Would You Rule?

SCENARIO

In a women's ITA doubles match, one of the players on team A called the ball out on the baseline but her partner and the other team kept playing the ball. Team B then hit a ball that was in the court but team A stopped play saying the previous ball was out.

(Nothing was done about the original out call but the chair official said to the Tennis Blog that the ball was good but that she wasn't sure about what she should have done.)

The referee ruled that they should play a let.

How would you have ruled???

As a chair umpire, you should immediately call out the score signifying the ball was called out. Remember folks, an OUT call should always stop play. Award the point to the other team.

Remember the rule: A player who calls a ball out shall reverse the call if the player becomes uncertain or realizes tha the ball was good. The point goes to the opponent and IS NOT REPLAYED.

since team A's partner and B kept playing the point, I would have awarded the point to team B since A's partner implicitly overruled her partner's call by continuing play. Obviously the out call didn't hinder anyone.

Bad call - point to team B!

I assume team "B" didn't hear or see the (finger)call. Upon calling the ball out, the umpire should stop play alerting that Player 'A' made an out call.
If team 'B' questions the call, then the umpire may overrule the call if it looked to be in.

Also, it is possible that team A's partner is not watching the line and did not hear/see the call, so continued to play - Her continuing to play should not overrule the call. If she would have called the ball "in" then that would overrule the "out" call and the point would be awarded to team B.

Once the ball is called out, then the chair announces the new score.

If Team B appeals, then overrule if the chair saw the ball in.

Point should not be replayed.

Where in the hell are these officials coming from? Please tell me this really didn't happen, unless of course it occurred at Tulsa, then I believe anything.

Hey Petey!
When you asked "where in the hell these officials were coming from", were you referring to the first anonymous in this blog?
Hey Randy, why not start a blog listing called "Where the Hell are These Officials Coming From?" as a showcase of bonehead calls? Speaking of bonehead calls how about the "experienced" ITA official roving 2 courts who couldn't remember how to settle a scoring dispute? So said "experienced" ITA official decides to pull out the old cell phone (in front of both coaches)and call the referee roving two courts further down the row for a little rules refreshment seminar. Of course, the referee didn't have their cell phone turned on because, after all, said referee was in the middle of covering contiguous courts.

Are you talking about our new "experienced" official or should I say new "seasoned" official from Stormin' Norman? He's learning the difference between J and JC. Only those on the "inside" will know what I'm talking about.

Stormin' Norman now knows that Jesus has a last name... He's making good progress in his seasoning process although he's not done yet even though he thinks he is...

We'll see tonight at the OU-UT match!

I may show up for the match so I can watch what transpires. Will there be any officials from Tulsa working the match?

Another question - how does one go about getting assigned to work Big 12 matches. From what I've seen, I'm better than most of the officials I've seen working Big 12 matches, at least the Women's matches. I haven't observed any Men's matches yet.

Hey Reverend McDOnald, ref Okie Dokie's comment about his/her abilities, what's the quote in the Holy Book about what comes before one falls flat on one's face?
