Baylor Bears: 2011 Men's Big 12 Champions

BAYLOR UNIVERSITY
2011 Big 12 Men's Champions

WACO, Texas - The seventh-ranked Baylor men's tennis team returned the Big 12 Championship crown to Waco on Wednesday night by downing sixth-ranked Texas A&M, 5-2, at the Baylor Tennis Center.

After finishing third in the conference in 2010, Baylor hoisted the trophy after Wednesday's match for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. Baylor now has 10 Big 12 regular season titles overall to go along with its seven Big 12 tournament trophies.

The win closes the regular season portion of the schedule for BU as the Bears racked up a 19-3 record and a perfect 6-0 mark in league play. Baylor has now finished undefeated in Big 12 Conference play in eight of the 15 years of the conference's existence. The loss drops Texas A&M to 23-5 and 4-1 Big 12 play. Baylor moves to 18-32-1 all-time versus Texas A&M, while holding a 17-7 record against the Aggies since the formation of the Big 12 Conference

The win gives Baylor the No. 1 seed at next week's Big 12 Championships in Waco. With the top seed Baylor will have a first round bye in the event, which means the Bears' next match, will be on Saturday, April 30 at noon.

I thought the officials did a fantastic job last night. Definitely had the A-Team working this match. Interesting what happened in the doubles match. I noticed one of the Baylor fans yelling and screaming at the umpires when one of the umpires quickly kicked him out of the facility. We couldn't hear what happened from our end of the court. Does anybody know what happened to cause the fan to be ejected?

The Baylor fan (and former Baylor player) made a very obscene comment about the chair official which was heard by the referee. He was immediately removed from the facility as he should have been.

Note: he did change clothes and sneak back into the facility later on in the match.

I was ready to see some fireworks thrown at the officials direction, but nothing happened. I was hoping it would be like Nascar racing. It's not fun to watch unless there is some crashing and burning.

Yay to the Referee for kicking the Baylor scum out of the facility. I take it the Referee didn't notice the ejected spectator sneaking back in. What would have happened if he would have been caught?

This is how it should be handeled at any match at any Facility...ANY FACILITY

I saw the match and the officials were very good - but the play was FANTASTIC - except the wrong team won ... any team should of won EXCEPT baylor and their TERRIBLE fans and their players are horrible sports. Yes they are good - but at what cost?

If the one who was kicked out had been caught sneaking back in then there would have been a point penalty assessed to the highest match still playing.

I doubt that would have gone over very well...

Good crowd. I wish all tennis matches were that much fun. I never saw anyone get kicked out - very sad to hear that. ONE QUESTION - why not have ball kids all the big colleges? They were almost as much fun too watch!!!

Wow bitter Aggie fans so polite to use words like SCUM and BAD SPORTS - have you ever played at A&M and seen how rude they can be. During the ladies match last night the umpire had to ask them to settle down and behave. It's amazing you just can't offer a simple congrats, I guess that's below you. I personally thought both teams played a fantastic match. Krajicek played amazing tennis and unfortunately for him his team did not follow suit. So congrats to the Baylor team for winning the Big 12.

"a point penalty assessed to the highest match still playing."

Against which team? Yes, I know he was a Baylor fan, but how can one be sure? If he had been wearing maroon would A&M have been penalized? What if he had been wearing orange and white and just came to watch good tennis? Would both/neither teams been penalized?

I'm not sure about this one . . .

In this case, the person was very obviously a former Baylor player. The referee would make the decision about whom the point penalty would be given but remember, the coach is given the responsibility for controlling the crowd that is "their's."

Of course, nothing would keep a good ol' Aglet from dressing like a Baylor Bear and causing trouble and getting a point penalty for the good ol' Baylor line...

Your right they do deserve congratulations. The Baylor guys did a great job - Austin K played wonderful to beat John P - but, remember that just because one team is a TERRIBLE sport - it does not justify another one to follow. Baylor, A&M and Texas all have OVERLY Dedicated Fans.

Tennis was good all the way around it is just horrible to see fans want to insert themselves into a tennis match. At some point it is not tennis - it is a loud distraction. SAD

And by the way, Austin was not alone - the aggies had another player, Alexi, on the end court that beat a very good Baylor player.

I observed an A&M uncertified official sneak in to the restricted area with a Big XII offcials' shirt on.

It is just plain unprofessional to pose as a Big XII official when one is not, but was asked to leave without
proper credentials.

The person kicked out of the match was snot-nosed punk Zoltan Papp, definitely a former player for Baylor.

Don't be jealous of Baylor - they have foriegn players and so do 90% of the other schools - they just have the better connections.

Anonymous said...

Papp is a grown man - why would he even THINK about acting like a dork. Until the coaches do something about their own players why would we expect anything different from the dorky fans.

I am confused - are all the 'good' officials only on the BIG matches? Who are the 'good' officials?

BETTER QUESTION - why would ANYONE want to be an official?

That official who tried to sneak in with a Big 12 shirt on was Bob Lammerts from College Station. I guess he couldn't afford to pay to get in the match.

We officiate to get rich...

I don't think Baylor charges to watch tennis matches. So the person in question wore his Big 12 shirt when not assigned to the match because . . . . ?

You officials should go sit in the stands at Baylor, Texas or A&M up close and listen to what ALL the fans from each school say to the opposing players.

It just depends on who gets "caught".
They all do it.

Why do the officials want to control the fans? That is the responsibility of the institutions and coaches.

I saw someone wearing a Big 12 shirt sitting in the stands during singles. I wondered why there was a 7th official assigned to that match. Now I know differently. Anyone know why he was there?

Lammerts tried to sneak in using the Big 12 shirt so he could stand on the side where the Baylor players stand. Who knows why.

Lammerts tried to sneak into the section reserved for officials and players. The Baylor staff quickly removed him to the fan's seating area. Why would he wear a shirt that is just like the one his wife had on?

Anonymous said...

Lammerts had a championship blue shirt from a previous year, not a grey conference shirt. He earned that shirt by working the event. Even at the Big 12 this year CJ gave championship shirts away. There was no sneaking. Many time officials bring a spouse or an offspring with them. Nobody has ever said anything before this. Lay out, snakes.
