Let The Chair Training Begin!

2012 TRAINING CLASS
Jim Arnold, Bettie Boyd, Josh Harvey, Mary Jo Douglass, Helen Lyons, Phillip Burch,
and Debbie Threadgill

As is customary in the late summer and early fall, CHAIR TRAINING begins in earnest at the tennis center at Highland Park High School. This past weekend, HP hosted 16 of the top high school teams in the state and the tournament was the training ground for new officials seeking to become ITA chair officials.

Highland Park ISD hosts the only formal training ground for ITA chair officials in the state (and probably the nation). This program enables HP High School to have chair officials for their dual matches as well as providing officials with a great opportunity to advance in the ITA ranks. This past weekend there were seven participants and three ITA certified instructors.

Pictured above are some of this year's participants in the training group.

The San Antonio area was well represented with Bettie Boyd, Helen Lyons, and Debbie Threadgill making the long trip to Dallas to participate.

Debbie may have her eyes closed in the bright sunshine for this picture but she was "all eyes" on the court.

If you are an official who is aspiring to do ITA chairs there are still a few more openings in the training program for this fall. If interested, contact Randy McDonald at rmtennis@yahoo.com

Who were the 3 certified ITA instructors? As far as I know, there is not such designation within the USTA organization.

Good looking group. Welcome!

The three instructors were David Fleuriet, Lee Thornburg, and myself. We are ITA instructors because we're all ITA certified and the only ones who will do it. I'd sure be open to more if you want to come train and instruct on your own dime...

Hey, Mary Jo! Congratulations! You continue to be such an athlete! I remember another "chair" you sat in - the lifeguard's at Brentwood Pool! I'll watch for you at the US Open one of these days! "You go, girl!" Melinda

What's the delio with the shoes? It appears your "certified" instructors have failed in the most basic of basics.

Wearing ITA caps at a UIL event! Really???? What ever happened to consistency in clothing. Looks like clothing is following the same as officiating ability. It is varying across the board. The only one consistency in the officiating world has been thrown out the door.

On a side note, heard the coordinator at Tulsa is going to make his officials wear the official "blue" ita shirt. Damn, pretty soon, we are all going to have to have a wardrobe of colorful shirts to use at each school.

I forgot to tell you that in Dallas and if you work with me, you can wear red shoes to go with the red shirts.

The ITA caps were because we didn't have any UIL caps and it was hot. Guess we are guilty of violating the fashion code but as long as it wasn't USTA, then I guess its alright.

Great job you do Randy of working with new officials and giving them the opportunity to work chair events to prepare them for the college level! I don't understand why anyone would say anything negative to this post. Welcome and best wishes to all the new officials!
