Question of the Day: Should Women Get Equal Prize Money At The Grand Slam Tournaments?
Today is a beautiful spring day and a great day to start a great discussion...
The US women's soccer team made a huge announcement today saying they are suing to get equal pay with the men's soccer team. This discussion is nothing new to tennis but with the recent issues at Indian Wells and comments by some of the top male stars, it might be a good day to hear the differing opinions on this issue.
Should women get equal prize money at the Grand Slam tournaments?

If they start playing best of 5 sets yes, however they do not. I do not know how you could argue there is equal work for equal pay when clearly a 5 set match is much more grueling than 2 out of 3
Of course women should get the same pay. They play the same number of sets, the matches last as long. Why not?
OH, you say they don't play the same number of sets. They play less. Then it is clear. Equal pay for equal work. If you work less you get paid less, so in this case NO
There shouldn't even be a question about this since the women only play 2 out of 3 sets and they only have 3 good players at most. Women's soccer is a joke and they couldn't fill the stands if they had to so why should they even think about equal pay?
Anonymous 8:26, wake up and smell the revenue! Right now, the soccer women generate a HUGE amount of advertising money for US Soccer, far more than the demonstrably inferior (on the world stage) men's team. And the women win! As far as US Soccer is concerned, the women are carrying the men on their shoulders. While a large number of Americans (men and women) could quote the names of many of the US Women's Soccer players, most Americans would be hard pressed to name any of the players on the men's team. Ergo, ipso facto the US Soccer women, who play the same length matches as the men, should be paid as well as the men. Then there's Women's tennis. As long as the men play 5 sets and the women three, the men should earn more for their effort.
On a related subject, taking Serena Williams out of the conversation, how about a blog on the sorry state of US Tennis competitors on both the men's and women's sides of the game? There isn't an American man or woman, beyond Serena, who stands a chance of making the semi's, let alone the finals, of a major tournament within the next 3-5 years. Or will it be even longer?
Women folk don't get equal pay in the workforce so why in hell should they expect to get equal pay on the tennis court.
