How Would You Rule?

We just got this one in and thought it would be a good topic for discussion:

A doubles player hit the ball over the net and because of the spin and wind, the ball came back to their side before the opponents hit the ball.  However, instead of the ball bouncing, the doubles team that originally hit it over the net, volleyed it back to the team that never hit the ball.  Who wins the point?

How would you rule on this one???

Receiver's point. Ball was still eligible to be struck by receiving team because it had not bounced on server's side yet. One of the only times receiving player may reach over the net to strike the ball.

The team that volleyed it back loses the point because they interferred with their opponents' opportunity to hit the ball - regardless of whether or not the opponent had a play on the ball.

Interesting assumption Anonymous 6:18, but how can you be interfered with, if you have no play on the ball? USTA Comment 11.1: Is a point decided when a good shot has clearly passed a player, or when an apparently bad shot passes over the baseline or sideline? No. A ball is in play until it bounces twice or lands outside the court, hits a permanent fixture, or hits a player. A ball that becomes embedded in the net is out of play. Nowhere that I can find does it say, the ball must be hit by alternating teams. I suppose it is so basic to the game they forgot to mention it.

I agree and really wish folks would stop debating on some extremely obvious calls. Talk about losing credibility for our USTA officials. I appreciate the two posts and putting this issue to rest.

Let's get our new 84 year old US Open Chief Umpire tell us the answer!

Does that mean we should award the point to the opposing team in ITA matches when the coach grabs the ball from preventing it from interrupting play on the adjacent court, given the ball hasn't bounced twice yet. Ludicrous simply ludicrous ,

What is Ludicrous? You have to re read the question AND THINK about the situation.
