Sorry but I must be missing the boat here. Why would you ever put brand new officials on lines at a Men's Challenger? I can understand Futures tournaments. Remember when the idiot called a footfault on second serve on match point in the third set tiebreak, after not calling any throughout the entire match??? It makes all officials look bad, just like the atrocious calls we see being made at the Australian Open this year.

I agree with Goofy. A Men's Challenger is not the appropriate venue for throwing in new line officials. Officials have a bad rap already. Using incompetent green officials at a major pro event only makes matters worse.

Who's the Chief Umpire of the Dallas Men's Challenger? They should have enough sense not to use incompetent officials.

hey - GOOF BALL

AGAIN - here we go calling one of our fellow Officials an "idiot" and you obviously were not there and you know everything that happened involving the footfault call... including the fact that the player footfaulted.

There have been a lot of GREAT CALLS at the Australian.

No matter what happens - people make mistakes - its your attitude toward them that makes our or breaks our profession!

funny how some Officials find sooo easy to find fault with others - maybe you need to look in the mirror - but first - SHUT UP!

MTOA holds line training before pro matches so that the new trainees can then observe experienced line officials working and we have experienced chair and line officials available to help with the training. You are correct in that the new trainees will probably not be working this event, but might be able to work Futures event later this year.

The only real requirement to work pro lines is that you be gay or lesbian and a minority with special emphasis on lesbian. Diversity rules and reigns.

First of all, it's a line clinic/training. The participants are introduced to line calling, the how(s), the where to be(s) and when. They are normally not invited to work the event. The training is held the day before the qualifying rounds start. The participants are invited to attend the event to watch the "experienced" line umpires.

This is not a manifestation of lunacy that the first commentator insinuated. It is training being offered for everyone regardless of their career aspirations. Not to re-boot the ITA/Pro debate here in Texas, but I have myself seen some in the "Big 12" who could benefit from a line clinic (introductory or refresher).

And what's up with the derogatory diversity comment., such sweeping statements are hurtful to the vocation of tennis umpiring as a whole and only highlight the ignorance and intellectual midgetry of those who hold them.

And to the person who brought up the "Dallas foot fault" incident...it wasn't an inexperienced umpire who made that call.

Looks like I may have pissed off one of those pro line wannabes. LMAO.

It does thrill my little heart to know we have some of the "pro" folks reading and commenting on the blog. At least they haven't all forsaken us and fled.
