A Few More Goodies From Stanford

They are having one great tournament out in Stanford! From all reports we get, the tennis is unbelievably good and everyone is having a great time (except for the losers...).

Here are a few little tidbits I hear through the vine:

* In the Baylor-North Carolina women's match, the NC player told the crowd, "in your face, m___ f____." The chair official did nothing but the referee did go up and warn the crowd.

* In the Baylor-Ohio State match, the OSU player hit the ball out of the stadium after he lost the first set. Seems that everyone in the facility saw the shot except for the chair official who was busy getting down from his chair and looking for the errant ball.

We'll keep you posted on any other updates. Wish we were all out there...

Sources tell us that the official who called the two footfaults the other day is the same one who took care of the Baylor women a few months ago. Sounds a little too familiar doesn't it?

Who is that source at Stanford and are they trustworthy? U know we have many that aren't who just like to make others look bad when they can't do the job themselves. No problem with factual info just the gossip and vile rumors that are unjustified that cause officials to lose interest in this game that could be alot more enjoyable.

The person that sent me these two items viewed them personally and I trust their word completely.

Any chair official that would permit a player to say that to the crowd should not be in the chair anywhere.

Period.

I'm not defending anyone on this issue because I was not in Palo Alto. But let me share an incident that happened to me.

I was in the chair. I heard a player 3 courts away from me clearly say an audible obscenity. When I asked the chair about this after the match, they had not heard these words. This official is one of the best I have ever worked with and one who is held in high regard by everyone. They were quite upset that this had happened and it was not coded. We went back to the court and I figured where the player was when I looked up (back to the chair, far corner and facing in my general direction). The wind (very windy) was blowing the length of the court away from the chair (carrying the sound in my general direction and away from the chair).

Now please don't respond by posting a bunch of blame on the chair on this. There is no doubt that the chair did not hear the profanity while others did.

So it can happen!

If they heard the comment. It is very loud at these matches and if the player says something to the crowd, it is not always heard by the chair.

Apparently the head referee heard it since he went out and cautioned the crowd. Maybe he should have assessed the code violation.

Even though some officials don't hear some things, some officials also act like they don't hear it so they don't have to do anything. It happens.

You're supposed to watch a player especially after he loses the first set. There's no excuse for not seeing him blast the ball over a 45 foot sign.

If the referee heard and warned the crowd, he could not code if if another point had been played. I was at the tournament for 3 days and thought the level of umpiring was very good.

I'm sure the officiating has been exceptional. After all, these are the finest in the land and should be doing the greatest tournament of the year.

I wasn't aware bands were allowed to play during dual matcheas. At the USC Men's match against Virginia, 10 members of the USC band were in the stands playing the fight song during play.

I'm really surprised the referee let this go on, especially since he's a freakoid for controlling everything that transpires during the match.

This would really be distracting to the opposing team. I guess as long as they weren't electronic, it was allowed. Any thoughts from anyone else? Can't wait until the next Baylor match next year. I'm sure they will have their band out in full force.

Horns and bands are now allowed in Texas. Not sure why they were allowed at the NCAA's.

do you mean "not allowed in Texas"?

Well we all know we have some officials who just s**k. If they missed an obvious code like the ball abuse described. Well they s**k!!! In the other case hopefully it is as described by one of the other comments. And due to crowd noise etc they couldn't make out what was said. If they could, well they s**k!!! Also there are plenty of officials whose word I trust but I wouldn't necessarily vouch for their awareness or judgement. Same for the ones who at times observe others and have no clue of rule interpretation or judgement. But they will tell you they do and they may even be good at fooling some others into their same way of thinking. Ps. I'm all for good officials and officiating and getting rid of the ones who s**k and the homers. It would be a much more credible and pleasant officiating environment!!!!

Can someone tell me how they pick the officials for the NCAA? Would that be like making it to the USOPEN if you were a pro line or chair official?

I would LOVE to call at the NCAA - if I promise to work a million College matches and lose weight - can I be invited?

Thanks BACO

You have to suck up to "Big Jim" Jim Russell and laugh at his poor Alabama boy "Leroy" jokes.
