Happy New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Well, 2011 is finally here! One of the greatest attributes of growing old is that you appreciate each new year even more--and are amazed that you have actually lived this long...

With age also comes the unique ability to make NEW YEAR'S PREDICTIONS so here are mine for 2011:

1. We will have the best year ever in officiating. Texas already has the most and the best but it will get even better!

2. Everyone we know and love will pass the background checks and they will become accepted procedure. The ones we don't like will fail and we will be rid of them for good.

3. The USTA will finally learn how to publicize something and have the kinks worked out before they initiate something as controversial as the background checks.

4. The officials site will only be four months behind instead of years.

5. Herb Taylor will get a new computer and actually learn how to work it.

6. Chuck Scott will be invited to do a college match somewhere other than Baylor.

7. Cheryl Jones will morph into being a sweet, doting grandmother.

8. Myron Krueger will sell his bike and take up motorcycling for a hobby.

9. Vickie Wright will get a new cat.

10. Tom Wright will get a new lab puppy.

11. Brookie Green will get a good medical report.

12. The Aggies will get a new coordinator.

13. Ron Ferguson will be invited to chair the NCAA finals as a guest "seasoned official."

14. Jim Lawson will finally get a daytime tv talk show.

15. Mike Standrod will be elected "Official Emeritus For Arkansas."

16. Kevin Foster will move to a western state to become a fishing guide.

17. The USTA will begin mandatory drug testing for all officials.

18. The USTA will begin a search for new chair officials because of #17.

19. The women's circuit will be cut down to only the Australian, French, US, and Wimbledon because of lack of interest.

20. UT football will win 5 games in 2011.

21. Baylor will go back to 3 wins in 2011.

22. Oklahoma will win the conference championship in football again but not in tennis.

23. Baylor, UT, A&M, and Oklahoma will all make it to the NCAA's and one of them will make the finals.

24. The Baylor women will make it to at least the final four in tennis and basketball.

25. Eva Hopping will get 5 new officials in Lubbock to give her some help.

26. A female official we all know and love will seriously consider retiring in 2011.

27. Another female official will get married in 2011.

28. Two female officials and one male official will have affairs and get divorced in 2011.

29. The RGV officials will start proceedings to be listed with Mexico Officials.

30. The Houston officials association will discuss becoming part of the Louisiana Officials Association but it won't come to fruition.

31. The San Antonio officials will begin discussions about having one officials organization instead of two but nothing comes of the talks.

32. The USTA will be sued again (and lose again).

12 - easier said than done. Who would the candidates be?

18(a) - is the Big 12 searching for new officials after the background checks?

33 - lunch will be served to officials at all USTA events.

Randy, Let's hope some of your predictions DON'T actually happen.

Rumor has it that because the contract officials signed to work Big 12 matches had no mention of background checks, they don't have to comply.

Well, a contract is a "contract".

I thought our certification last year in 2010 was for the year 2011 anyway. So everyone certified now should be good to go for 2011 events.

My understanding is that the Big 12 will ignore the background check issue. Also, I think the rule about the 2010 school certifying you in 2011 is out the window and no longer valid.
