I remember watching him in the Cotton Bowl back in the 60's. He was something! Throwing it long for Bob Hayes to run under.
But the way he and Howard Cosell used to go at it on MNF!
Before the Interstate was completed, there was a sign outside of Mount Vernon, Texas that reminded travlers that this was the home town of Don Meredith.
Remember when Monday Night Football was an event? The ratings were huge and folks tuned in to hear how Don would get under Cosell's skin that particular evening. Or, tune in to see if Don would be sober. Now, we can "access" football three nights a week and none of those nights have the luster that Mondays had, way back when. And one of the best parts of the Monday night "Event" was Cosell's halftime recap of Sunday's action. It was the only real recap in town. There were no sportscenters, nor 24 hour overkill hype of the NFL.
