Serena: 2009 Female Athlete of the Year

The beauty...

And the beast...

The Associated Press announced today that their winner of the 2009 Female Athlete of the Year is Serena Williams.

Asked about her infamous incident at Wimbledon, Serena had this to say, “People realize that I’m a great player, and one moment doesn’t define a person’s career,” Williams told the AP. “And I was right, for the most part: It wasn’t right the way I reacted—I never said it was—but I was right about the call.”

She also noted that the outburst, which resulted in a record fine and two-year probationary period at Grand Slam tournaments, “got a lot more people excited about tennis.”

Isn't it great to have someone tell us she is a great player...

And then to tell us that she was right about the call... Especially when her foot was on the line!

If that's what it takes to get a "lot more people excited about tennis" then we are in lots of trouble...

Would the 'right' part be that no foot faults are to be called during match game. I've always heard people say it's not fair to call foot-faults that deep in the match; and they wouldn't do it then.

Serna has been taught by her dad that she is bigger than the game. She only plays when it's convenient for her and doesn't support the tour. A real professional for sure!!!

Can you imagine Roger Federer or Pete Sampras saying "people realize I'm a great player."

I guess beauty is in the "eyes of the beholder" and this beholder doesn't like what he sees. YUCK - it makes me lose my appetite.

Yes, she's an insufferable cow. Yes, she thinks she's bigger than the game: Most certainly, her backside is. Yes, she only plays "the game she's bigger than" when she feels like it. And, as long as she wins on the big stage, she'll be allowed to play the game the way she wants to. You wouldn;t expect the USTA to take firm action against her, would you? She might sue! Afterall, if officials can sue, what not her?

How appropriate that Serna ( a big horse's ass herself) just nosed out Zenyatta, the Breeders' Cup Classic winner.

Actually, I can imagine Pete Sampras saying that.
