New Recovery Rule

New rule for rest between matches.

Printed below is the new rule just adopted by the USTA and effective immediately:

Recovery Rule - Effective Immediately

USTA has mandated that all full two out of three set singles matches shall offer a minimum rest period of two hours. A minimum rest period of two hours is not required for matches using shortened formats, matches using a 10-point match tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, and all 10 & Under tennis formats.

Super Champ Major Zone "B" Draws (Main Draw) and Champ Major Zones (Main Draw) will use a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set through the quarterfinal round. Semifinals and finals will play a full two out of three set matches.

Junior Others: Depending on draw size the Tournament Director and/or Referee will determine the appropriate match format.

NOTE: Someone just added a comment that they had checked with the USTA and this is a rule for juniors only.

LOL!!! The Men's open division playing a 10-point match tiebreaker.

Blame it on “Global Warming”. Only logical explanation. How many years have we run tournaments with the one hour break?

Since it is just a singles rule in adult tournaments you can be sure that everyone will be going to a 3rd set tiebreak. Otherwise, they will be there until midnight or later every night.

I just asked USTA and was told this is Juniors Only rule.

Thank goodness. They should have made it clear when they put the rule out there I would say.

I guess this will help those out of shape players, like "baby got Back" Serena

Um "baby got Back" Serena has been winning full third set matches for a good while now. This rule wouldn't apply. Support our AMERICAN tennis players, not bash them.

My earlier info was incorrect, the Adult and Senior people are voting on it now, so it appears as tho this will not be limited to Juniors...

Yeah right, Serena is a great role model for the kids. She is so ghetto. Poor work ethic, rude on and off court, only plays the tournaments SHE wants to play (in my opinion ONE is too many for me)', and is uglier than the average momma gorilla.

Sources tell us that our "tennis councils" are preparing to vote on instituting this same recovery rule in adult and senior tournaments.

Makes me wonder if they have ever actually run a tournament.

THINK POSITIVE...

You know - this break time will give you officials ample opportunities to get more food, sit in the shade, talk with cute Mom's (or Dad's), and/or talk on your smart phone!

What's the real goal with this new regulation? Is it to force tie breakers in lieu of a third set and maybe shorten matches? Is it to push tournaments into Tuesday? Is it to lengthen tournaments even more so the td's can charge higher fees? Will officials rise up and demand midnight snacks? It would be real interesting to hear the perspective of the TDs who visit the blog.

I am a TD in south Texas and this new rule will shorten the tournaments. Any draw over 16 will not play a third set. Shorter tournaments equals to less expenses on court cost, no new tennis balls for the third set and I will need officials for a shorter time. Thanks USTA, sounds good to me.
