MTOA Slate of Nominees

According to the by-laws of the MTOA, four new board members shall be elected at the annual meeting. Here are the four nominees as presented by the Nominating Committee (other nominations can be submitted from the floor):

Nancy Ebersole
Stephanie Burnam
Susan Wertenberger
Gary Tolbert

Larry Gendron will also be nominated to fill Cathy Kennan's unexpired term.

Be sure to read the information about the annual meeting in the following post and come and join everyone on December 4th!

Isn't there supposed to be a maximum time period a person can serve on the Board? It appears the third name on your list has exceeded her time limit per the MTOA bylaws.

Have the bylaws changed and not been published for the general membership to see, or is the existing Board simply lazy and not abiding by their own rules and regulations?

What exactly does the MTOA Board do for the local DFW officials? Us peasant worker-bees don't see a lot coming out of this organization, other than paying us for services rendered (which is an excellent thing).

I bet the MTOA Board members get paid lunch when they work local tournaments!

I have a question: Does the MTOA get involved when a fellow member accuses another official of harassment? This situation has allegedly occurred here in Oklahoma with one of our older officials being accused and it appears nothing is being done about it. This is especially sensitive in light of the recent Penn State "incident"

Just to answer a few questions for you...

First, there is no limit on terms that a board member can serve. If you would like to see someone else on the board you can always nominate them from the floor at the annual meeting. Many times we have trouble finding people who will serve on the board.

Second, the MTOA provides much-needed training for new officials as well as a resource for tournament directors who need officials. One of the biggest things the MTOA does is pay your checks (after they receive the money from the tournament) and the provide you with a Form 990 to do your taxes.

Sadly, some MTOA board members do not get lunches/suppers when they work tournaments because they ignored rules and allowed tournaments to hire officials without providing meals.

Third, the MTOA would be the first line to deal with a complaint of harassment. There is a Texas Section Committee that would probably get the complaint first but they nearly always refer it to the local association. In 18 years of officiating I have only know of two officials who have been de-certified in Texas.

Hope this helps...

FYI: That would be a "Form 1099" that is sent enumerating the total compensation for the year.

Sorry about that. I get confused when I start thinking about taxes and the IRS.

Randy, This is the first I have heard about an opening on the board. How does the process work? Why wasn't the general members giving a chance to nominate someone?

The way the MTOA is set up (according to the by-laws) is for a Nominating Committee to be appointed by the President (Nancy King). Then the Nominating Committee presents a slate of four board members at the annual meeting. At this time anyone can nominate anyone in addition to this slate and then there is an election.

There are four board members who rotate off every year hence that is why the Nominating Committee presents four nominees. They are also responsible for presenting the name of someone to fill any vacancies that exist (example--Cathy Kennan moving away.)

Hope this helps...

If you or anyone else is interested in serving on the board you might notify any current board member and they can recommend your name to the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee always contacts their nominees before the annual meeting to be sure they are interested and willing to serve.

Last year the committee sent out an e-mail asking for nominees, why didn't this committee ask the 100 members if they had someone in mind for the board? Who is on the committee this year?

The Nominating Committee is made up of myself, Susan Wertenberger, and Stephanie Burnam. All of us were appointed by our President, Nancy King.

It was unusual for a committee to send out a request like that but it seems like a good idea. Maybe next year's committee will do that.
