Serena Williams In The News Again

Serena Williams was fined at least a record $82,500 for her U.S. Open tirade and could be suspended from that tournament if she has another "major offense" at any Grand Slam in the next two years, Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock told The Associated Press on Monday.

Babcock's decision was to be formally released later Monday.

He said Williams faces a "probationary period" at Grand Slam tournaments in 2010 and 2011.

If she has another "major offense" at a major championship in that time, the fine would increase to $175,000 and she would be barred from the following U.S. Open.

*** At least they did something. Imagine if they had had this much courage when McEnroe and Connors were doing their things...

I believe that her punishment should be to play more tournaments since she doesn't like to play that many during the year in addition to the fine.

Just wait until she tosses another "major outburst" and the grand slam folks are put in the position of having to weasel out of their suspension edict.

She made over $6 million last year, this is chump change to her. Course, she is a JW and all but one of the many I have known have all been greedy. This might teach her a lesson, losing that much money.

Big deal -- money means nothing to her. Only suspension would mean anything, and no one is going to have the guts to deem another of her "incidents" worthy of suspension. She should have been defaulted for THIS incident, not have been allowed to play in the women's doubles final, AND suspended.

Actually, the maximum fine was set at $175,000. She has a 2-year probation and if violated the fine goes to the $175,000. The current $82,500 was arrived at by taking the $175,000 minus $10,000 (the amount the U.S. Open already fined her) divided by 2. viola: $82,500. So, if she gets hit again that's another $82,500. The $175,000 was arrived at because that's the difference between the quarters and semi's pay (350,000 vs. 175,000).

If you ask me, she got off lite here. Not being able to play the next couple of Majors would be sending a huge message to her and any others. Will we be hearing from Al & Jesse tomorrow??

p.s.
I bet Tiger gets Elin a new big ring by next week that will be larger and flasher than Kobe got his wife a few years back.

Speaking of Tiger.....

I GUESS EVERYONE KNOWS BY NOW THE PROBLEMS TIGER IS HAVING. WELL IT'S GETTING SO SERIOUS THAT NIKE (TIGER'S $30 MILLION A YEAR SPONSOR) IS SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING CHANGING IT'S NAME. NIKE WILL SHORTLY BE CHANGING IT'S NAME TO NOOKIE..

Just think of the size of the fines that McEnroe and Connors could have rung up if they had actually been doing something about their behavior. Serena was mild compared them those two in their heyday.
