As Referee What Would You Do?

This is a true life scenario since it happened to me. What would you do?

SCENARIO
The event is the men's national junior college tournament in Plano. As referee I am standing and observing an official on court #1. As I look out, I see the official standing at the net post with a Diet Coke in one hand and eating a Snicker's bar! One of the coaches casually walks up to me and says, "that one sure doesn't inspire much confidence."
What would you have done????

I would tell the coach to shut up and sit down. You could ask the coach if he would rather see the umpire sitting under a shade tree doing nothing, or intentively watching the players on court while consuming much needed nutrition.

You could always tell the coach you are a slave driver and won't allow the roving umpires to take time off to eat.

Assuming he was a roving official, I would casually mention to him (off the court) that it give the appearance of being unprofessional and to take is "break" off the court. No big deal.

Now, if he was supposed to be chairing the match . . . . .let's hope this wasn't the case!

I would ask the coach if he was related to the umpire and then when he asks why you made that comment, tell him you thought they were related since neither inspires much confidence and watch his reaction.

If this is one of those events that has "eliminated" lunch for the officials, then i see this as the official making the best of the situation. On the site working and grabbing a bite to eat.

Anyway, this is roving and there is some down time as matches finish and new matches start up.

Maybe, Randy should have told that coach if they weren't so cheap to just use rovers, they could have gotten more officials so all the matches were solo'd.

It was fairly early in the tournament so they were only roving.

I always provide lunch and supper but I guess it just wasn't enough for this official.

We did have a talk after she rotated off the court.

To show I believed in "diversity and openness" I did buy that official an extra large lime cream slush from Sonic later in the day.

So should we not eat while on court? I always was led to believe its better to be a presence ON court than sitting under a shade tree OFF court.

I was always taught to not eat on the court. I don't even carry my water bottle when I'm roving. The only exception to this is when there are coolers with drinking cups between courts. I will get a quick drink from there and toss my cup in the trash. I save the food and major fluid consumption for off the court. But this is just the way I was taught to do it.

Knowing you, I would make sure he or she didn't take the last Diet Coke. We all know you can't survive without your daily dose of DC.

Randy or other need an answer to an issue ran into tonight/weekend.
Umpire gets called to court to call lines, upon assuming position at net post, the server calls the score 40-30, umpire hears the score and the point is played won by the server, which leads to game and subsequently set for server.

I got called to court for interpretation (yes I know should not go since rule of fact and not rule). Umpire says heard score called 40-30, receiver says he did not hear score and also argues that the score wa wrong, yet no scoring dispute had been mentioned when official arrived.

My decision as site referee was point stands and it is game and set for the server, assumption that if Official heard score called, the receiver did also.

Extra large lime cream slush? So she was punished.
