Chair Refresher Opportunities

Carol Linden in action! One of our more experienced MTOA officials.

All chair officials need a time of refreshing from time to time--and this weekend we have a great opportunity for our Metroplex (or anywhere else) to come and sharpen their skills.

Highland Park High School and Plano West High School are hosting a team tournament on Friday and Saturday and it features the top high school teams in the state--and they have invited us to come and do chairs at their tournament.

This opportunity is open to everyone and even if you are a new official and would like to come and do chairs, here is the schedule: (We will have experienced officials there to help if you are a new official and would like to learn to do chairs.)

Friday 7:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Highland Park High School
Saturday 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at Highland Park High School

There will be no pay for the event but it is a great opportunity to get some great practice on some great matches. These matches are very similiar to college matches so they will afford you some great experience.

We only have room for 6 chairs per dual match so if you are interested please contact:

What no pay - are you crazy. I bet RM is getting paid.

You are right--I am getting paid but if a person wants chair training, this is how they can get it. Without experience noone is going to hire them to work ITA and this is the only place that training is being offered.

Sorry if this offends you.

This should not surprise anyone, RM is GREAT at getting paid and not doing any work ?? But I guess in his mind talking to everyone and drinking a diet coke is considered " Good Officiating"

You don't get paid to learn a new skill that's going to generate income for you!

Be thankful that the annual USTA school is free.

Well, is at least LUNCH provided for these FREE services??

I do love my diet coke and I would also imagine I can (and have) worked circles around whoever sent in that post.

Well Randy, inspite of some of the more negative comments, I would like to thank you for the chair training opprotunities you have provided. I think it great that you offer those interested a chance to see if they like being in the chair.

Yeah - I like the way all the chair umpires think that once they work for a while that they never need any practice. I am a chair umpire and work a bunch of ITA's. I notice this arrogance all the time by a particular group of umps. If you are too good to never need practice, then take your arrogance and shove it. Everyone needs practice and education in both their professional work and their hobbies and sports. Could you imagine if Pros didn't practice tennis or professional music artists didn't practice? No practice or education is as good as hands on - the real thing. The USTA school doesn't give you that. If you don't want to work for free and practice - THEN DON'T WORK - but don't get on RM for making the offer to everyone.
We all know there are a bunch of very new and inexperienced or wanna be umpires. This is a great opportunity for them. Besides, before anyone gets hired, they need to shadow or work a few matches to show competency. Better here than at an ITA match.
