In a recent match and the women's junior college nationals a player from a school in New York City received a code violation point penalty for throwing a can of water through the fence on her opponent's team members.
Should she have received just a code violation or a default?
(It has no relevance on this first code but she was also coded at the end of the match for slapping the hand of the official when he reached out to shake hands at the end of the match. She was also the player who received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct in her doubles match for refusing to warm up. Needless to say there is some counseling needed for this player.)

Would this not be justified as an extension of the 'physical contact' rule and deemed grounds for default? Ans. YES.

Regarding the hand slap, it was the chair officials fault and she should not have received a code violation. The chair should never extend a hand at the end of the match unless the player first extends a hand.
It was hot. I'm sure the player was only thinking about preserving the welfare of her opponent's teammate and wanted to make sure she stayed cool.
