Considering The Cost of Being A Referee

Everyone always wants to be in leadership or maybe a little higher up in the pecking order of things--and that holds true in tennis. Everyone always wants to be the referee but sometimes when you are one, you find out there are lot of things that go with the position.

In addition to having to make crucial decisions, here are some financial factors to consider:

$40 Annual USTA membership.
$75 Fee for eye exam (required)
$250 Meals and mileage to attend Texas Section workshop for referees in Austin (required)
$200 Cost of personal time to attend worshop (7 hours driving and 3 hours class time)

$565 Total cost for one year of being a referee excluding equipment.

Just a little food for thought if you are considering moving up the corporate ladder...

The referee does not have to attend the workshop in Austin as long as the tournament director attends.

This is true but sometimes the TD can't attend so the cost falls directly on the referee who has already gone through a referee school that has a Texas Section rules teaching.

I heard Pete Gameros is on the warpath again, but now he has set his sights on the USTA. Either he has filed a greviance, or a lawsuit. Does anyone have any added information?

Rumor has it it's because he feels shafted in getting those cush USTA wanna-be-pro referee jobs.

How did he do on his last one(s)? Win? Lose? Draw?

hey this topic raised a question for me: do you guys and gals just list your referee income from 1099s under the miscellaneous income line on a 1040, or do you report it as a business and try and account for all of these expenses as deductions against the income? I was told by someone that it can be a "hobby" and you just take it as misc income, or try and report it as a business, but you might run up against surcharges for self employment taxes and the like.

The estimates are a little disingenuous. I mean, come on, $250 for meals and mileage? You charge yourself for that? Your lunch is paid for there. If it costs you more than $100 for gas and a meal otherwise, then you are doing something wrong. To then lump your personal time in there too is just funny....

And of course you don't have to go if the TD goes, so there again it is not required.

I do agree with your post from today stating that a certified ref shouldn't have to go, but you went a little overboard here.

Sorry to disappoint you but your reasoning and figures are a little off.

Mileage from my house to Austin is 220 miles so that makes 440 miles at .54 a mile (IRS). Plus, they DID NOT provide meals at the workshop I attended so that means I had to pay for breakfast, lunch, and supper to go down there. I left home at 7:15 a.m. and returned at 8:30 p.m.

I added my time (at a mere $20 per hour) to show that I had to take an entire day to go down to a workshop that never should have been required of a certified USTA referee.

Sorry to disappoint you...

I guess you didn't attend the original meeting since lunch WAS provided. Charging for mileage vs gas costs is a joke.

I hate to disappoint you yet again. I never said I attended the original meeting but lunch was not provided at the second meeting.

Had I figured the IRS rates for mileage alone it would have been $237.60 for my estimate was well below that considering I also had to pay for 3 meals.

You must be a staff member at the Texas Section office...
